Many sections of VoIP Detective offer the ability to break calls out into classifications such as internal, inbound, outbound, local, long distance, and international.  VoIP Detective determines what classification a call should have based on the prefix that is added to the call.

*Note - Configuring (or not configuring) these options will not affect your ability to pull reports in VoIP Detective.  These fields are only used to help VoIP Detective classify calls as internal, local, long distance or international.

Example 1 - North American organizations

Inside of North America, we generally have a fixed length numbering plan (generally referred to at the North American Numbering Plan or NANP).

  • Extension Length - for example :  4.  This should be the length of your extension, as configured on your device's line page in CUCM.  This allows VoIP Detective to tell what is an internal call.
  • North American Numbering Plan (NANP) - Enabled.  This tells VoIP Detective that we're using fixed length dial plan, and know exactly how many digits each call will have.
    • Local Call Digit Length - for example :  10.  Each local call will be 10 digits long
    • Long Distance Call Digit Length - for example :  11.  Each long distance call will be 11 digits (1 followed by the phone number)
  • International Call Prefix - for example :  011.  International calls will be the external call prefix + International Call Prefix + the number.
  • External Call Prefix - for example :  9.  This is the number that you would dial to make an external call.  In older times we would call this the number to get an "outside line".

Example 2 - Outside of North America, and E.164 numbering plans

Outside of North America, there exists variable length numbering plans, where it is not possible to say "a long distance call will always be X digits long".  In this case, VoIP Detective will not be able to classify calls by local or long distance.  If you always dial the full E.164 number, even if you are in North America, you would fall into this category, as well.

  • Extension Length - for example : 4.  This should be the length of your extension, as configured on your device's line page in CUCM.  This allows VoIP Detective to tell what is an internal call.
  • North American Numbering Plan (NANP) - Disabled.   VoIP Detective will not attempt to classify local or long distance calls.
  • International Call Prefix - for example :  011.  International calls will be the external call prefix + International Call Prefix + the number.  If this is left blank, then VoIP Detective will not attempt to classify international calls.
  • External Call Prefix - for example :  9.  This is the number that you would dial to make an external call.  In older times we would call this the number to get an "outside line".

Important notes:

  1. These settings all revolve around what an end user would enter into their phone to make a call.
  2. Changing these options will not alter or change your call records.  It is safe to make changes and test out different configurations to see what works best for your organization without fear of permanently breaking anything.
