Overview
VoIP Detective can be licensed two ways:
- Online — the appliance activates itself over the internet. Use this unless your network blocks outbound access.
- Offline — for appliances with no internet access. Requires VoIP Detective Pro, and an activation key issued by support.
Your license is tied to your Site URL, administrator email, and public IP address. Changing any of these can break licensing.
Who can configure this: Administrators (Group 2) only. Licensing is at Administration → Licensing.
Before you activate
Go to Administration → Configuration and confirm your Site URL and administrator email are correct. Activating with the wrong values means re-licensing later.
Site URL format:
- http://<ip address>
- https://hostname.yourcompany.com
No trailing slash. The value must match exactly what was registered — a changed scheme or an added slash counts as a different Site URL.
Tip: Online licensing needs outbound HTTPS (TCP 443) from the VoIP Detective server to these URLs license.voipdetective.com www.voipdetective.com update.voipdetective.com If your network requires a proxy, configure it in Administration → Configuration before activating. |
Online licensing
- Go to Administration → Licensing and select Online.
- Confirm the license key shown is correct.
- Click Activate License.
If activation fails, see Troubleshooting below.
Offline licensing
Offline licensing requires VoIP Detective Pro. Free licenses must use online activation.
- Go to Administration → Licensing and select Offline.
- Copy the Offline License Request string. Use the copy button to the right of the box.
- Send it to support — see Opening a support ticket below.
- Paste the key support returns into Offline License Activation Key and click Go.
The request string is generated from your Site URL, administrator email, and license key. If any of those change, you will need a new key.
Important: Offline licenses expire. Your expiration date is shown at the top of the Licensing page. Request a replacement key from support before it lapses — an expired offline license stops call record processing. |
Troubleshooting
Start here
Go to Administration → Licensing and click Verify License. This reports the current problem.
Note: Verify License uninstalls and reinstalls your license, so it requires working internet access. Do not use it on an appliance with an offline license. |
Activation fails on a new installation
In order of likelihood:
- No internet access. Confirm outbound HTTPS to the three addresses listed above, or configure a proxy.
- Site URL is wrong or misformatted. Check Administration → Configuration against the format above.
- Wrong license key. Confirm the key on the Licensing page matches the one support issued.
“Domain in use”
Your Site URL is already registered to another installation — usually because an appliance was deleted and rebuilt, or the Site URL was changed, without uninstalling the license first.
If you are changing your Site URL:
- Administration → Licensing → Uninstall License
- Click Uninstall License a second time
- Click Purge License Data
- Administration → Configuration → update the Site URL → Go
- Return to Administration → Licensing → Activate License
If the appliance was deleted and rebuilt, open a support ticket to have the old Site URL released. A new license key will not resolve this.
“Maximum installations limit (3) reached”
Your public IP address has changed several times and the license is registered to addresses no longer in use. Open a support ticket and we will clear them.
A working license stopped working
- Click Verify License. If it succeeds, you are done.
- If not, run the uninstall / purge / activate sequence above.
- If your public IP address has changed, open a support ticket to have the license reset.
Opening a support ticket
Go to support.voipdetective.com and click Submit a ticket in the upper right corner.
Include your logs from Administration → Troubleshooting. For licensing issues, also include your Site URL and license key.
Tips & Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if my license expires?
Call record processing stops. Existing records remain and remain searchable. Processing resumes once a valid license is applied.
Can I move my license to a new appliance?
Yes. Uninstall the license on the old appliance first, then activate on the new one. If the old appliance is already gone, open a support ticket to have the Site URL released.
Does my public IP address need to be static?
No, but frequent changes can trigger the maximum installations limit. If your public IP changes regularly, let support know.
Can I switch from online to offline licensing?
Yes, if you have VoIP Detective Pro. Follow the offline licensing steps above.
Do I need to restart anything after activating?
No. Licensing takes effect immediately.
